Sue and I went to the Maldives in September 1999. We stayed on an island called Kuramathi, which is about 1 mile long and a couple of hundred yards wide. I took my Mamiya 7 and Minolta 600 along with a selection of film. The islands are quite incredible and I was very pleased to have returned with some pictures which do them justice. The following images were all taken with the M7 and fuji velvia. I did, however, also take some infra-red film, both colour and high speed black & white. No filters were used with these shots, not even a polarisor.

A wide angle shot using the 43mm lens, mid-afternoon, looking east. . |
This shot was taken from the small sand bar at the north end of the island. I waded out to it, which was a little risky, but provided this wonderful image. Again, wide angle lens. . |
A little later on the sun set, I am looking north, out towards the sand bar. In the Maldives the sun rises and sets at 6 every day! I used a slow shutter to blur the sea and capture movement in the clouds. . |
Sunset by the water bungalows. This was the first night on the island and set the tone of the following two weeks. . |
![]() Same place, different weather. A stormy sky covers the water bungalows set in the green sea. |
